Questions about PEAL

What is PEAL?

Plain English Allergen Labelling requires all packaged food in Australia and New Zealand to declare allergens using specific plain-language names in bold. It became mandatory on 25 February 2026.

Will this make my labels legally compliant?

LabelReady formats your labels according to the Food Standards Code (Standard 1.2.3, Schedule 9). You are responsible for the accuracy of your ingredient lists. We recommend verifying with your local food authority.

Who needs this?

Any business selling packaged food in Australia or New Zealand. Bakeries, market vendors, food manufacturers, and online sellers on Etsy or Instagram.

What are "may contain" statements?

Precautionary allergen labelling (like "may contain traces of nuts") is voluntary in Australia. You can add one when creating your label.

What if my ingredient isn't recognised?

We'll flag it so you can check whether it contains allergens. Our dictionary covers the most common Australian food ingredients and is growing.
